On Friday evening the Club’s Officers Triples team of Dave G, Bev & Gerald were up against the current holders of the Bowls Wiltshire Officers Triples from Pewsey Vale. The triple got off to a good start and maintain their advantage to win 20 shots to 7. In the Semi Final they will be at home to Avon.
Tuesday 18th July saw the annual visit of pupils from Devizes Sports College, a visit that has taken place for a number of years under the guise of the club being involved in the community and bringing about a connection between the club and the younger generation in the hope that some, having sown the seeds, may, in later years join a club and enjoy the sport that we all enjoy.
Two sessions took place the first one in the morning from 11.00am to 12.15pm involving four boys and four girls and was played across three rinks two aiming at targets and scoring points and one delivering a jack to a circle of objects and achieving 5 points for a jack in the circle and 10 points for hitting the tennis ball in the centre.
The afternoon session from 1.30pm to 2.45pm involved 12 boys and the targets were replaced with other objects in a circle at different jack lengths and again a points system created a winner from the group.
Presentations were made to the winner of each session by way of a club badge and each pupil and their teacher were presented with gifts to remember the day by.
Many thanks to coaches Debbie and Ellen and helpers Geoff, Rosemary and for a short time Tom.
In the Quarter Final of the Men’s National Over 55 Rinks competition Jonathan Cook, Gerald Webb, Trefor Jones & Colin Little won a close game 19 – 18. They started slowly and after 5 ends were 8 – 3 down , but they clawed their way back into the contest and at 10 ends the match was all square. They then got in front and at 15 ends held a 16 – 12 lead, one which they held as, going into the last end they held a 3 shot advantage which was enough to secure the win. They will now play in the semi finals at Devizes on Sunday 16th July. The winners of this competition will represent the county at Royal Leamington Spa in August at the National Championships.
Despite going eleven down in the first four ends, Rosemary, Bev & Gerald won 8 of the next 9 ends to draw level in the BW Officers Triples. The game, being played at Blue Circle, remained close going into the last end all square at 15 all. Rosemary put one of her woods close to the jack and despite all their efforts Blue Circle could not move it so the Devizes Officers won by one shot. In the next round they have a home tie against Box.
Yet again on a Saturday morning in May the club held what turned out to be a very successful Open Day. Despite a few concerns about the cold weather, which in the end proved unfounded, there was a steady stream of visitors resulting in a final figure of 35 signing up for coaching to create a class of 2017.
Well done to all who played their part it was very hectic at times but will be well worth the effort if even only half of those receiving coaching finally become full members.
