After an incredible run of victories which culminated in a magnificent win against the Avon B team 10 days ago, the team of Nigel Moore, Mike Mitcham & Mike “Digger” Aiston took to the Devizes green to play none other than the Avon A team, for a place in the Devizes Gala Final being held at our club on 20th September.
It was always going to be a tough match, and as expected Avon came flying out of the blocks, taking a 3-1 then 5-2 lead. Digger Aiston was struggling with Avon’s lead player and England International, but Mike M was making up for him by putting in some incredible shots, clearing the way for Nigel to go toe to toe with their skip, which he did brilliantly.
However, With 13 ends gone and trailing 11-7 it looked like the writing was on the wall, and all I could do from the sidelines was keep cheering them on, as the light started to fade both figuratively and factually.
But, cometh the hour, cometh the man! Digger Aiston suddenly hit top gear, putting not one, not two, but all three woods on the Jack. Did we have a chance? Were we back in it?
We grab 2 on the 14th end, and with Digger’s arm now flowing like a Fiddlers elbow, the mighty but tiny Mike Mitcham playing out of his skin, and the calming and unflappable Nigel “more more” Moore at the helm, we went on to win 14-12!
