Congratulations to John Scoffield

Devizes Bowls Club will be represented at the Bowls Wiltshire Finals!

John Scoffield has reached the finals of the County Unbadged singles which is being played Sunday 8th September at our own club at 10am! Very well done for your outstanding performance in the club competitions and County games.

A testimony by Darren Woodcock

I will apologise, as I know he doesn’t like a fuss, but John has been an incredible unsung hero for Devizes Bowls club. He should be recognised for not only his incredible achievements this year, but also for the encouragement that he has given to some of our members, and I include myself in that list.

This year, he not only won the Men’s Championship, The Two Woods, The Mixed over 60’s and the Men’s Pairs, he also reached the final of the last game of the weekend, The Husband & Wife final. There, both John & Isobel along with their opponents Pam & Kelvin treated us all to a fantastic game, with not only some amazing shots, but many comedy gold moments that only a “Husband & Wife” team could possibly give. When we were all not laughing, we were cheering every bowl, and it felt more like the noise from a football match, rather than a bowls weekend.

However, in the build up to our finals weekend, John had also fought his way through to the County Unbadged Quarter finals singles at Chippenham Town, which coincided with our own Saturday finals. John duly turned up and won his match, and 15 minutes later played his semi final match and yes, you guessed it, he won that as well!

I went along to support John in both of these matches, and I can honestly say, he was not only the best player out there, but he also carried himself extremely well in some very competitive and fractious games.

I know I will be there not just to watch some great bowls on Sunday, but also to try to give just a little bit back to someone who has been a real support to me, and been a great ambassador of Devizes Bowls club. If you are free come up and join me to cheer on John and see if he can become the Wiltshire Unbadged Singles Champion!

CAPTAIN’S CHARITY DAY 2024

What a beautiful day on which to hold this years Captains Charity Day. Well done Lynn and Kelvin for dreaming up such an interesting fun game, and by the way, it’s not too late to support Wiltshire Sight… just click HERE

There were some excellent exhibitions of skill, and there has to be winners of course, this year it was the participants who did the Captains and the Club proud but one individual was the overall winner, so arise Sir Robin !

What an amazing collection of raffle prizes too ! All donated by our club members. A big thank you to everyone who contributed.

As usual there were fines abounding for some naughty boys and girls, not naming names but one member stood out !

This years charity Wiltshire Sight is such a worthy cause which the members we were pleased to support with this day.

Club Competitions – Play By Date Extensions

With August quickly approaching we have less than a month to go until the club finals.

I have decided to extend the Quarter Final deadline from Saturday 26th July to Wednesday 7th August and the Semi final (and Round Robin) deadline from Friday 23rd August to Wednesday 28th AugustThis is to allow a bit more time to get the games in but the deadlines will have to adhered to, giving me enough time to plan the finals weekend.

As a reminder, if you are on top of the draw it is your responsibility to arrange the game and find the marker if necessary. There isn’t a possibility of any more extensions from these deadlines so please try to organise the games as soon as possible.

Thank you.

Happy Bowling!
