THE ANSWER

Short answer

19 Dead jack

19.4 If the jack is dead, the end is a dead end and law 20 will apply.

20 Dead end

20.1 A dead end is not counted as a completed end even if all the bowls required to be played have been played.

20.2 A dead end must be replayed in the same direction unless the skips or opponents in Singles agree to play it in the opposite direction. (If the jack and bowls need to be transferred to the opposite end of the rink before the end is replayed, they must be transferred in a way which avoids distracting players on neighbouring rinks.)

Interesting answer which I leave you to investigate

19.5 Alternatively, Controlling Bodies can decide not to have the end declared dead. Instead, the jack must be placed with the nearest point of the jack to the mat line at the appropriate re-spot position described in either law 56.5.2 or 56.5.3, or as close as possible as described in law 56.5.4, and play must continue.

THE QUESTION  June 2023

Ok picture the scene, you are away at another club there are 3 rinks in use for our competition.

During the match one of our rinks is holding its own, they are ahead just , we are on end 16 the opposing skip is the last to play his last bowl we are holding 5 shots.

Then whoops !! their skip squeezes the jack sideways out of the head and it ends up on the left hand adjacent rink !

Everyone shouts “Dead end” and all 3 rinks have an opinion on what to do next but

QUESTION

All agree the Jack is dead but do you

  1. Declare the end dead, but count the end as completed with no score recorded
  2. Declare the end dead and play it again but from the same end
  3. Not declare the end dead but re spot the Jack.
  4. Not declare the end dead but replace the jack at a point agreed to have been where it was struck

Two Wonderful Days

We have just had two wonderful sessions of bowling which have been so well received.
Friday afternoon we had the pleasure of the company of a group from Devizes PHAB Club. They really got stuck in and attempted to conquer the targets we set up for them. Never mind about the success the enjoyment said it all! I think they surprised themselves (and us!) with how well they did! Thanks must go to Terry and Juliet for bringing them along and to Angie King for doing the scoring. We gave them a tea afterwards and Jane Thompson kindly stepped in to make sure this was all ready for them when they came in. We look forward to seeing them again next month.
On Saturday we invited all of this year’s newcomers who have just finished their coaching to come along and join in a game with some of our more experienced players. Well what can we say! There were different styles of bowling, some successful and some not but the enthusiasm could not be faulted. This was a big learning curve not just for them but for the wonderful helpers who took it all in their stride and never once faltered in their encouragement and support. Thank you all for your patience and understanding.
The game was followed by a cream tea which went down extremely well. Thank you Jenny for making the scones and all the other members who supplied cakes. Thanks also for the volunteers who helped clear up afterwards, it made things much easier.
This is the first time we have done this but all in all a huge success. Watch out Leamington!!

Friendly vs Avon

The weather started very slightly disappointing with one or two spots of rain, but quickly dried. It was pleasantly warm then finished in glorious sunshine. This was very much reflected in our play, concluding with a rather convincing victory – winning by an amazing 86 points to 42.

However it wasn’t all about the result… we all had a great afternoon on the green, made some new friends and enjoyed a fantastic afternoon tea provided by our hosts.

Special thanks to Ellen, Ian & Babs for helping me to be the highest scoring rink… commiserations to Bill & co who were only two points behind!

ANSWER

OK all of those that answered the quiz thought it was a simple question, the answer to which everyone knows but in fact there were a couple of things which were not spotted and no one appears to have looked up the Laws and made a precise answer.

So this is it :

The first question is entirely wrong therefore none of the answers are strictly correct

So first you have to define the Mat Line C.20 Mat line: the edge of the mat nearest to the front ditch. All measurements
involving the mat and a jack or a bowl will be taken from the centre of the mat line.

“the player to play first must place the centre line of the mat lengthwise along the centre line of the rink with the Mat Line at least 2mtrs from the rear ditch and at least 25mtrs from the front ditch”

The second question answer specifically requires the centre of the Mat Line to be used to measure the distance.

THE QUESTION

The mat must be placed 2 mtrs from the rear ditch but is it measured from

  1. the front edge of the mat
  2. the centre of the mat
  3. the rear edge of the mat

The jack is delivered short relative to the mat do you check by measuring from

  1. the front edge of the mat
  2. the centre of the mat
  3. the rear edge of the mat
