Floodlit Bowls

The Floodlit Bowls on Wednesday was a great success.  Although It was a little bit chilly, everyone seemed to ignore the cold and just concentrate on finding the jack!!  A bit difficult at times but that was the aim of the game!!

We are grateful to Sydenhams for providing lighting, and also to Kelvin who backed this up with extra floodlights to make the event possible.

A fish and chip supper rounded off the evening and a big thank you goes to Ricky and Terry for running the Bar.  All in all a great sociable evening.

Monday Afternoon Roll Ups

The last Monday afternoon roll up session for this season was held yesterday.  It was well attended and members were treated to a cream tea afterwards.

The Monday afternoon sessions have been a new venture this season.  The sessions are open to all members but have particularly benefited the members who find it difficult to attend evening sessions and also find it challenging to play 18 ends. It has proved to be a very successful format and we are hoping to make it part of the Fixture list again next year.

The sessions have been very relaxed and friendly which is just what we were hoping for. Thank you to all the members who have made this the success it has proved to be. You have all been fantastic.

Congratulations to John Scoffield

Devizes Bowls Club will be represented at the Bowls Wiltshire Finals!

John Scoffield has reached the finals of the County Unbadged singles which is being played Sunday 8th September at our own club at 10am! Very well done for your outstanding performance in the club competitions and County games.

A testimony by Darren Woodcock

I will apologise, as I know he doesn’t like a fuss, but John has been an incredible unsung hero for Devizes Bowls club. He should be recognised for not only his incredible achievements this year, but also for the encouragement that he has given to some of our members, and I include myself in that list.

This year, he not only won the Men’s Championship, The Two Woods, The Mixed over 60’s and the Men’s Pairs, he also reached the final of the last game of the weekend, The Husband & Wife final. There, both John & Isobel along with their opponents Pam & Kelvin treated us all to a fantastic game, with not only some amazing shots, but many comedy gold moments that only a “Husband & Wife” team could possibly give. When we were all not laughing, we were cheering every bowl, and it felt more like the noise from a football match, rather than a bowls weekend.

However, in the build up to our finals weekend, John had also fought his way through to the County Unbadged Quarter finals singles at Chippenham Town, which coincided with our own Saturday finals. John duly turned up and won his match, and 15 minutes later played his semi final match and yes, you guessed it, he won that as well!

I went along to support John in both of these matches, and I can honestly say, he was not only the best player out there, but he also carried himself extremely well in some very competitive and fractious games.

I know I will be there not just to watch some great bowls on Sunday, but also to try to give just a little bit back to someone who has been a real support to me, and been a great ambassador of Devizes Bowls club. If you are free come up and join me to cheer on John and see if he can become the Wiltshire Unbadged Singles Champion!
